Ryunosuke Okazaki

Ryunosuke Okazaki was born in Hiroshima, Japan in 1995, and received his MFA in Design from Tokyo University of the Arts in 2021. He continues to live and work in Tokyo.
While Okazaki’s work often centers on fabric-based sculpture, his sustained engagement with the medium extends beyond his dual practice as artist and designer. Fabric carries a genealogy that reaches back tens of thousands of years, bearing significant roles as makers of social status and culture. For Okazaki, working with fabric is both ritual and prayer―guided by the tactility of the hand and the responses elicited from each material―an act that honors the history and natural environment of his native city. His celebrated JOMONJOMON series reinterprets the dynamic patterns of the Jōmon pottery in contemporary terms, evoking cultural lineages that continue to resonate within the shared consciousness of various civilizations in East Asia.
