GILLOCHINDOX☆GILLOCHINDAE, an artist whose practice explores the themes of the city and youth, will present an art project titled “JYU” Episode 3 EDGE.

The “JYU” series, which has unfolded across seven years, is a long-term project that depicts the “boundary between cities and humans,” featuring a dark beast as its protagonist. This fourth installment will feature the series’ largest installation to date.

The project is set on the riverside area of the Tama river, where the artist spent much of his childhood.

Swaying golden susuki grass, water shimmering in the breeze, and memories of the suburbs enveloped in afternoon light…

The venue will house a massive installation of approximately 60,000 blades of susuki grass as well as a man-made embankment.

“EDGE,” the artwork’s subtitle, is a reference to the various boundaries, or edges, that human beings straddle: life and death, reality and illusion, city and nature. GILLOCHINDOX☆GILLOCHINDAE seeks out the essence of human existence by exploring premature impulses and the fissures etched in the city.

Genre-defying works will unfold at the venue, including moving-image works and screenings by video artist Taro, who works with cinematic techniques, as well as durational performances by various artists.

“JYU” attempts to transform the “memories and impulses” of young men living in the suburbs into contemporary urban mythology. A new narrative emerges from fissures in the landscape.
