Setsuo Hitomi

Setsuo Hitomi (b. 1945 – d. 2002) was a self-taught painter who began making art in his twenties or thirties while working full-time. Without formal art education, he sketched and painted the natural scenery of Shonan, Mount Tanzawa, and Mount Ōyama, creating many works inspired by the rich landscapes surrounding his home. In the 1990s, Hitomi developed a distinctive style of bold compositions and vivid colors depicting everyday scenery and plants, earning enthusiastic support from fellow artists. He maintained his style throughout his career, remaining an independent and uncompromising figure until his passing in 2002. Gallery Trax began presenting his work with the solo exhibition in 1995 and continued to actively showcase his art throughout the 1990s and 2000s.
