EASTEAST_ is a Tokyo-based art fair founded by culture workers from the diverse industries of art, fashion, architecture, design, and music. Championing independence and a spirit of solidarity, the founding members plan and operate the fair with an open-minded and critical perspective, bringing together the challenges and questions they encounter in their everyday experiences as cultural practitioners.

The first edition of EASTEAST_ in 2020 reevaluated the significance of art and galleries during the pandemic, and proposed a new and experimental approach to art fairs. In 2023, the event relocated to the Science Museum (Chiyoda, Tokyo) for its second edition, welcoming approximately 10,000 visitors. In addition to introducing artists, communities, and projects born out of Tokyo’s rich cultural scene, the EASTEAST_ also attempted to create a space for building solidarity. This fall, the third edition welcomes exciting galleries and spaces from abroad, in addition to first-time exhibitors from Japan. Valuing the reality and potential of artistic endeavors, the event will feature forums for people working within the art and culture sector to discuss the challenges that emerge in their fields, and off-site projects that directly connect with local cultural scenes and communities in Tokyo and beyond. EASTEAST_ is both an art fair and an experimental platform for a new cultural ecosystem originating in Asia. It seeks to be a space for exchange to foster new relationships and perspectives, where commercialism and cultural output coexist.
