Ham Sung Ju

Slept, 2025

Born in 1990, Ham Sungju (함성주) reconstructs not physical objects but mediated “images” captured through cameras, monitors, and other visual devices, translating them wordlessly into the surface of painting.

Using distortions, noise, and the diffusion of light specific to the screen as his material, he transposes these qualities onto canvas in a process of translation that turns the gap between reality and image into a central inquiry. By retaining only the essential layers and refining his compositions as if polishing a surface, he draws the very “screen-ness” of visual apparatuses into painting, pursuing the conditions of image-making in the digital age.
